no lost wages vacation
Reasons I would not travel to Las Vegas for pleasure.
- Las Vegas was not founded a traditional city. Traditional cities have residential, commercial, industrial, cultural, educational, recreational and religious entities in some balance. Las Vegas may have started a traditional town, but did not become a traditional city.
- Las Vegas’ main attractions revolve around one thing :: Gambling. Prove me wrong. But, visitors to the area cannot explicitly avoid the casino floor and find much to do that would make the city identifiable, much less unique.
- Las Vegas main industry is tourism. It became what it is because of that. To me, that is not interesting.
- Las Vegas offers few opportunities to ‘meet the natives.’ Unless you are in the front lines of tourism or gambling, I would assume you would do your best to avoid those parts of town. [It is here that being gay may be an advantage, since I would like it would be even less likely for heteros to meet that way.]
I have ‘vacationed’ in Dallas. While not what I would call a swinging city, Dallas is still more interesting that I can imagine Las Vegas being. Las Vegas would be like vacationing in Des Moines, to which I was for a wedding, except with casinos along one main drag. Maybe, if I visited it, my mind would change. I may have an opportunity the second full week in October. If I go, I would visit it during the week, for a business conference. Maybe, I could get a chance to see if anything exists beyond the Strip and the other tourist traps. I do not have hope.
